Today, we celebrate an incredible milestone:
July 25, 2024, marks exactly 10 years
since the Grand Opening of our Kibera Town Center!
Remembering Our Start
Our journey began in 2010 when our founder, Connie Nielsen, spent several months working in the slum of Kibera in Nairobi, Kenya, while making the movie “Lost in Africa.” During this time, Connie witnessed the harsh realities of life in Kibera, where education was an unaffordable luxury and basic necessities like clean water were scarce and expensive. This was a turning point that would change the lives of many people for the better over the next 10 years.
Today, looking back, it is impossible to fully imagine and appreciate the scale of work done by the people involved in the project. Connie, along with her co-founder, David Warner, CEO of Redhorse Constructors, created a vision that goes beyond basic needs. The Human Needs Project has always been about more than just clean water. The Kibera Town Center hosts an array of services aimed at tackling poverty from all angles: sanitation, energy infrastructure, education, credit access, laundry, healthy food, and employment opportunities, all under the same roof.
Before opening the Kibera Town Center, Connie and David spent nearly four years setting up the project, building the center, and preparing the newly recruited team to lead the efforts on the ground.
For Kiberans, by Kiberans
Our Kenya team consists of 50 bright Kiberans, including directors, managers, line staff, and volunteers. Most of our core team working today has been with HNP since day one! Here is what they have to say about the impact HNP has made on them over 10 years:
Just like we took a chance on Stella, Byrones, Felix, William, Fridah, Chrickson, Mary, Nancy, Peter, Tairus, Michael, Pamela, Victor, George, Jackline, Teresa, Daniel, Sumaya, Everlyn, Boniface, Ronald, Julian, Stephen, Jimia, and many more over the years, we appreciate you taking a chance on us!
None of this would have been possible without the support from our donors, partners and believers.
Thank you for being part of this incredible 10-year journey!
